1. What the public database lists
The Department's corporations and business entities FAQ says a public search shows the current entity name, the date of organization, the jurisdiction if the entity was not formed in New York, the county location, the service of process address, the registered agent if one is designated, and the current status. The DOS ID is found by searching that database. The Department does not require or maintain the names of the members or managers of a limited liability company.
The database instructions say the Department relies on information provided to it and does not promise that the information is complete or accurate. Search by name or by ID. You can filter with the entity type control and choose a matching type, then open the entity from the list.
The Secretary of State is the statutory agent and forwards process to the address on file. The service of process address is that forwarding address. The FAQ does not call it an owner's home, and it does not say the address is usually a filing service.
2. New York's own ownership filing is narrow
The beneficial ownership disclosure FAQ, current on the Department's page as of December 23, 2025, says only an LLC formed under the law of a foreign country and authorized in New York must file. An LLC formed in New York is exempt. An LLC formed in another U.S. state or territory is exempt.
The same FAQ says beneficial ownership information is not accessible under New York's Freedom of Information Law. Access is limited to the paths the FAQ lists, including a written request with consent, a court order, a government official acting in official duties, and law enforcement. Calling the filing "confidential" without the FOIL point leaves out what the Department actually wrote.
That state filing is separate from FinCEN. The LLC owner guide states the federal public-search limit and links FinCEN. Neither filing is a substitute for the deed.
3. How to search, then where the people are
- Copy the grantee from the county record. In New York City, recorded documents are searched in ACRIS, the City Register system. Read the grantee and the signature on the instrument.
- Open the Corporation and Business Entity Search Database and follow its link into the search.
- Search by name or DOS ID. Note the filing date, county, jurisdiction, status, service of process address, and any registered agent the row actually shows.
- Stop expecting member names. The FAQ says the Department does not keep them. If the LLC was formed in another state, use that state's guide. Delaware prints the agent and the file number. Florida prints titles such as member, manager, and authorized representative.
- Write the DOS ID next to the property row in the LLC research worksheet so the next search is the same entity.
4. What a New York row cannot decide
Status tells you the Department's current label, with the Department's own warning on completeness. County tells you a location the filing used. The service of process address tells you where process is forwarded. None of those fields is a member list, and a registered agent, when one is designated, is the agent and not a declared owner. The registered agent guide is the short version of that distinction.
If Locate Next cannot check the company, the LLC owner lookup page says the product shows the official link and holds the row for review. It does not invent a New York member the Department does not store. Skip tracing software for property lists is the product home.
Common questions
Can I find the members of a New York LLC in the state database?
No. The Department of State says it does not require or maintain member or manager names for a limited liability company. The public search shows name, date, jurisdiction if not New York, county, service of process address, registered agent if any, and status.
Does New York's beneficial ownership filing show owners to the public?
The Department says the filing applies only to LLCs formed under the law of a foreign country and authorized in New York. Domestic LLCs and LLCs formed in another U.S. state or territory are exempt. The information is not accessible under FOIL.
Is the service of process address the owner's address?
It is the address the Department uses when it forwards process. The FAQ does not describe it as an owner's residence, and it is not a member list.
Is a New York registered agent the owner?
The database lists a registered agent only if one is designated. That line is the agent. The Department still does not keep member names, so the agent line cannot prove membership.
